Fitness Motivation

By Jeff Lindstrom On January 23, 2011 Under Eating, Exercise, Life, Tips

It’s quite obvious that we know that being active and working out is good for us so why is it we don’t take care of our body like we should? I truly believe our body is our temple and it is unfortunate to how some don’t take pride in their health and well being.

Now I’m not applying this from a physical appearance standard because even some people who are lean, carry muscles are still unhealthy as a result of what they put into their body.  Regardless the point of this post is to discuss why people aren’t taking care of themselves.

Everyone in this world is unique because of their genetics, where they come from, the day to day challenges they face etc etc.  Now I understand that working out isn’t for everyone but when they hate what they see in the mirror, are sick and tired of being sick and tired, don’t fit into their favorite pair of jeans or whatever the case may be.

Something needs to change! You are you for the rest of your life so make the most of it.  When you are active and eating well we feel happier, less stressed and I believe are better people all around.

I’ve been a Personal Trainer for about 10 years and I have heard all the excuses in the book.  I’m too tired, I don’t feel like it, I don’t have time, there is too much going on at work.  Those are just example excuses but by doing some sort of activity whether it’s a group fitness class, activity, sport, or working out can improve your energy, sleep and reduce stress.

Consequently, you will be more productive at work, making quicker decisions and so on.  I’m encouraging you to make time for yourself.  With today it seems a lot of us are on the go so it’s important to take care of you.  Do things that you enjoy and make you happy.

For those that hate working out but involve themselves actively with someone or a group, it won’t seem like exercise when you do something together.

I encourage you to write down your day from the moment you get up out of bed. Mark down absolutely everything from when you eat breakfast to the time you head out to work.  Surely we can find time at some point in the day where you can be active.

Remember it doesn’t have to be one hour each time.  With today’s desk jobs it’s important to be as mobile as you can.  I find that a lot of time is wasted at night time watching tv. Invest in a piece of cardio equipment that enables you to watch your favorite shows but you are at least moving while doing so.

I find a great way to motivate people is to put something on the line.  Whether this is a reward or punishment.  Not many people like to be punished or lose something but perhaps a reward is a better scenario for you.  What I mean by this is to make a commitment to yourself, write it down, and realistically set a goal. Whether it’s for the day, week, month.  I would suggest at the end of the month if you reach your goal of workouts you will treat yourself to a day at the spa or whatever will motivate you.  Make it personal and something that’s in the back of your head so if you are making excuses you will not want to lose that opportunity to go to the spa.

On the contrary if it’s a punishment put money on the line, or something you can’t go see whether it’s an event or concert.  Something personal that will make you get to the gym so it allows you to claim the reward or not get punished.  Again ensure your goals are realistic and attainable. Do this for you!

Please pass on the good word and “like” this post.

Thanks for this article! I think the last point is very important, set a goal and just try to reach this goal!

Thanks for the comment! Most people don’t set goals so this is imperative to keep dialled in. I always encourage clients to look at short , medium and long term goals. Where do they want to be, and ensuring they achieve this. Setting unrealistic goals will only set you up for failure.
